Whether you’re planning on taking your side-hustle full time within the next month, year or decade, you should never hate your day job.
Yes, it’s tough, testing and tiring.
Yes, it’s frustrating having to work for someone else when all you want to do is work on your passion project.
Yes, your boss can make you want to rip your eyes out and quit, right then and there.
But you should never hate your day job. And I’ll tell you why…
If it weren’t for your day job, you wouldn’t have a side-hustle.
You’d be broke, most likely homeless & worst of all, starving. Because I mean, food is #lyf and we kinda need it to survive.
Without that day job that pays the bills, puts food on the table, allows you to invest in tools for your business or enrol in programs to help you become a better business owner…
You’d be at square one.
So the next time your boss pushes your buttons & reminds you of why you “just can’t wait to quit & be your own boss” (and yes, I’ve said this many times in my life), remember this…
Without your day job, your side-hustle would be non-existent.
You’d have no paying clients.
There’d be no solutions to your clients and customers problems.
You’d be broke or just slowly running out of money.
Without your day job, you’d never be able to bring your dream business to life.
And I get it, it’s hard to shift your mindset to think completely opposite to the way you’ve been living the last month, year or decade. I’ve been there, I’ve been in your shoes.
But let me tell you…
Once you overcome the mindset blocks, once you realise how lucky you are to have a day job and once you switch that hatred over to being grateful for your day job, that’s when the magic happens.
I speak from experience here.
It wasn’t until I realised how powerful gratitude is – and especially in the world of manifesting and the Law of Attraction – that I started to appreciate my day job, instead of despising it.
Don’t get me wrong, I actually LOVED my last ever day job before I took my side-hustle full-time.
My boss was (and still is) a really great friend of mine, I was great at what I did (and still am 😉) and honestly worked with the most amazing people.
But even working in a day job I loved, even when I got to see 80+ super cute children and 20+ colleagues on the daily – for context, I was an Office Manager at a childcare centre – I still had my moments.
Some days I just wanted to stay home & write blog posts, create landing pages and binge watch Ted Talks all day long. But I couldn’t. I had a boss to report to, families to show up for and quite frankly, money to make to help pay the bills.
And maybe this is you too, maybe you can relate to the exact situation I’m talking about here…
Loving your day job, but wanting more.
But I know, completely shifting your entire mindset isn’t going to happen in a heartbeat, so I’ve put together for you a few quick tips you can do to help the process along.
Whether you choose to write in a gratitude journal every morning & night like I do, or simply write a list of 10 things you’re grateful for once a day – it’s entirely up to you.
Gratitude is honestly one of the most powerful tools I have ever come across.
It helps to:
- Increase happiness
- Decrease depression
- Boost your energy
- Shake off negative emotions
- Appreciate what you’ve got
- Get into a growth mindset
Think about it this way – if a good friend of yours gifted you a box of chocolates or bunch of flowers right now, would you take the gift & just walk away?
Hopefully not 😳
You’d surely show them your gratitude for the gift with a heart-warming hug, a gift in return or a simple “thank you!”
It works the same with your business & your side-hustle.
When you are grateful for having a day job that allows you to have a side-hustle, you’ll not only get yourself into a great headspace, but attract more of those good vibes!
Start Smiling More
Yes, yes, yes… I know what you’re going to say “but what have I got to smile about?! I want to be at home working on my business!”
But, much like gratitude, smiling is in fact another powerful tool for helping boost energy levels, shift your mindset & get you in the right headspace.
Science has even proven that the simple act of “putting a smile on your dial” actually sends signals to your brain (woah) & releases certain hormones including dopamine & serotonin.
And, before you go freaking out over what these fancy-pants words are: I’m talking about those incredible hormones inside of you that make you A) Happier & B) Less stressed!
In fact, I once heard that by putting a smile on your face (even if it’s forced) for 17 seconds, instantly creates that ^ chemical reaction, making you instantly happier!
And if that’s not reason enough to start walking around your day job with a smile on your face, then I don’t know what is…

Stop the Negative Talk
When was the last time that you said something along the lines of “I’m so sick of this place!” or “I can’t wait to just get out of here & do what I want?!”
Cause I’m telling you here & now, I have been there.
Before I realised just how much impact the words I was using had on my happiness (and how fast I could quit my day job), I used to trash talk all of the time.
And do you know what… Half the time it wasn’t because I hated my day job (remember before how I told you that I loved my last job!).
Half the time I was in this state, talking negative about it, was because it’s what I saw everyone else doing.
You’ve only got to look at some Facebook groups & listen to some (not all!) side-hustlers and how they talk about their day jobs.
But the good news is, this doesn’t have to be your reality. You don’t have to feel the same way that they do about your day job.
And I mean, there’s a reason why you’re 1000+ words into this blog post, right?!
So, instead of opting for the “trash talk” as we’ll call it, start to talk about your day job like it’s the greatest thing in the world. Find the good in your day & talk about that.
Sure, your boss might interrupt your lunch break for 5 mins & frustrate you, but how about that incredible win you achieved for the team 10 minutes before that?!
What you focus on you find, so make it count.
