The episode breakdown:
Elley: Welcome to another episode and as you would have just heard I have the amazing Rachel with me today. Rachel, welcome to the podcast. I’m very excited to have you here. Let’s jump straight in and start right at the beginning of how you got started in business and all of those fun things. So, tell us – who are you? What do you do? How did you get started?
Rachel: I am actually a former fashion blogger then blogging coach turned mindset coach and I always find it kind of funny when I say that because you would not believe how many people also started out in fashion blogging! I primarily work with other female coaches who are wanting to overcome the limiting beliefs that hold them back from creating success in their businesses. And I know what it’s like to get started on the journey to becoming a coach and dealing with those limiting beliefs of not feeling like you’re good enough or capable of making a career of it. So I made it my mission this past year to really help these women step into the version of themselves who is super successful and wildly abundant as a coach.
I got certified last year in 2019 as a life and success coach through Yes Supply with Reese Evans and I also got certified as a practitioner in neuro-linguistic programming, Emotional Freedom Technique, time techniques and clinical hypnotherapy. Having these tools has really just allowed me to do some amazing deeper mindset work within myself.
Elley: The thing with coaching is that it looks so different for everyone. I love that you mentioned that when you transitioned into coaching, you dealt with the limiting beliefs and self-doubt which is now what you help your clients through the different tools that have allowed you to overcome your own limiting beliefs. They say you should always be a step or two ahead of the person that you’re helping. What made you want to start a business? What was the internal motivation?
Rachel: So it’s interesting because before we hopped on this call, I was thinking back to high school and college years and what I wanted to do for the rest of my life, and for some weird reason, it just never occurred to me to start a business. It was never something that was on my radar. I felt like the people that I was surrounding myself with, none of them talked about starting a business. It just never seemed like it was a path that I would take in life. Until 2009 when I was in college and I started my fashion blog which I started as a creative hobby. I didn’t really know where it was going to lead me, and I didn’t know if anything was going to come of it.
I’ve been in that position where I’ve had a job that I hated going to every single day and I was miserable. I would basically spend every single day during the week just counting down until the weekend and then when the weekend finally arrived, I could only think about the fact that I had to go back to work in a day or two. I just wasn’t happy. I wasn’t fulfilled. There’s nothing wrong with working for somebody else if that’s what you want to do but I just didn’t feel compelled to do that for the rest of my life because I felt like my job was dictating what time I woke up in the morning, what I wore to work, how long my commute was, what I did all day and what time I got off work. I wanted more freedom over my day to day schedule and that’s why I really felt like I needed to take the leap and start a business doing something that I was going to enjoy and look forward to every day.
Elley: I’m sure so many of the women listening can relate. So I’m curious, you started your fashion blog back in 2009 but when did you actually make that decision of like, I’m going to do this business thing? When was that?
Rachel: That was in 2015. The last day job that I had was at a law firm that I worked at for four and a half months before I decided screw this, I can’t take it anymore. I don’t ever advise this to people but I left without having any kind of backup plan. I was just so unhappy, and I couldn’t deal with it anymore so I decided that I’m going to leave. At that point, I was actually doing some virtual assistant work for somebody which wasn’t full-time income, but I knew I was making a little bit of cash from that. And it was in 2015 that I made the transition from what was a lifestyle blog and then I just decided I need to do something more and that was when I started the coaching business.
Elley: Your story is pretty interesting but the overall theme has been to follow what felt good, right? Tony Robbins always talks about being driven by pain or pleasure. You can be driven by the thought of how painful it would be to go back to a day job. You can use that as your motivation and be like I am making this business work! What’s your take on mindset work when it comes to overcoming limiting beliefs and working on confidence? Why are you a mindset coach?
Rachel: What made me move in this direction was because no matter what I was doing, I was always talking about the law of attraction, manifestation and doing the mindset work, even when it didn’t necessarily pertain to what I was offering in my business at the time. Those were the things that I was always talking about on social media and in my real life with friends and family so it made sense to ultimately move in that direction. I was always reading books about mindset stuff, listening to more mindset based podcasts and it just seemed like that was the natural next step to start incorporating that in my work because that’s what I was so passionate about.
When it comes to working with my clients, I really like to incorporate a blend of both the mindset work and the strategy work because I don’t think you can have one without the other. You can follow all of the best business advice from experts around the world and still fail to see results if you have a crappy mindset around success and what you’re capable of achieving. You can also have an amazing mindset and still fail if you aren’t putting in the work and doing things the smart way in business.
Elley: You’ve got to have that blend of strategy, doing the work and showing up as well as the self-belief and the confidence. A crappy mindset and a great strategy don’t work. In your business, what do you think some of those really common limiting beliefs are that most people struggle with in online business?
Rachel: When I was starting out, I was filled with a lot of self-doubt around whether or not I was good enough to be a coach, because at that point in time, I had never coached anybody before. I didn’t know if I was going to be good enough to make a living as a coach and I didn’t know if I was going to be a success or if it was going to be a huge failure. I think so many people go through that because they’re afraid to put themselves out there. They’re afraid to take that risk but you don’t really know until you try.
Elley: I think every business owner goes through that stage of feeling like they aren’t enough, they aren’t smart enough, talented enough, qualified enough or doing enough. That’s something I help my clients with a lot. They’re like, I’m not doing enough and I should be doing more. I’m like, you should be doing less! I think that’s probably one of the biggest beliefs that can hold you back. When you feel not enough in some form, it can really have a big effect on the strategy. Like we said, without the mindset work it makes the strategy a lot harder because then you don’t feel like showing up.
Rachel: It stops people from showing up and putting themselves out there. They get afraid of promoting their offerings but if you’re not promoting your offerings then people aren’t going to see it. And if people don’t see it, they’re not going to buy it. I’ve worked with so many people that had beliefs that come from their parents not really being supportive and cheering them on. I’ve dealt with that as well. I’ve had people feel like they simply aren’t good enough to make a lot of money or to charge a lot of money.
I wish that I had the tools that I have now after being certified in all of these different modalities like neuro-linguistic programming and clinical hypnotherapy. I wish I had known about that a long time ago. Why don’t we learn this type of stuff in school? Maybe so many of us wouldn’t have held ourselves back for years doing something that we really wanted to do.
Elley: Yes!! I want to dive into the law of attraction stuff because it really intrigues me. How do you use the law of attraction in business? What are some of your favourite tools and techniques that you use to like manifest in business?
Rachel: Journaling is my favourite manifestation tool. I just love to sit down and script my desires into reality every morning because it helps you to become an energetic match for the things you want to attract into your life.
For manifesting something into your life, you want to become a vibrational match for it and scripting is just an amazing way to do that.
The other thing I really like to do is to make sure I’m taking the time to visualise things. It’s so simple. I like to visualise right before I go to bed which is actually key to me manifesting $10k in a matter of days! Thinking of what I wanted to manifest and what my life would look like when I had it.
Elley: That’s so amazing. I love love, love visualisation. I love scripting. I have three habits that I do every day which are reading, journaling and visualising. For the ladies listening who are wondering what the hell is an energetic match? Can you break that down as simple as you possibly can for us?
Rachel: Being an energetic match for what you want is by vibrating on the same frequency. So to become an energetic match for the things you want, you want to embody the feeling of already having that thing. Say you want to manifest $10k. What is your life going to look like when you have that $10k? Visualise how you’re going to feel and what you’re going to spend that money on. Visualise that money in your bank account. That’s going to help you become an energetic match for it. You’re going to tap into that energy and that vibe of having the $10k right now and the universe has no choice but to deliver it to you.
Elley: I’m reading a really great book at the moment called a Happy Pocket Full of Money and the chapter that I just read last night was all about visualising but also understanding that everything happens in the now. There never is a tomorrow or a yesterday. We only have now. So thinking that I have it now in the present moment. Which I think is a really key part of being an energetic match. Let’s talk about how does someone script and how do they script their goals into reality?
Rachel: This is a part that you’ll definitely want to take notes on because I have a three-step scripting formula that I like to use. I actually have a course where I break this whole thing down but I’ll share the one key element that I teach in that course that I feel like a lot of people just don’t seem to address.
Basically, scripting is just writing into existence the things you want to manifest in your life.
You want to think about it like you’re placing an order with the universe for exactly what you want to manifest. When you’re scripting, you are writing about what you want as if you already have it because when you’re writing from a place of already having the money, the car, the relationship, whatever it is, you allow yourself to become that energetic match for that thing, and then you’re vibrating on the same frequency as your desire and that’s how it manifests into your reality.
My three-step scripting formula. The first step that I use starts with a simple phrase that is pretty common when people start scripting, you don’t necessarily have to use this exact phrase but so many people do. Start your scripting entry just by saying, “I am so happy and grateful now that” and then you just finish that sentence by saying whatever it is you want to manifest.
The second step is to write about how you want to feel daily. Now that you’ve manifested your desires how is your life changed and what do things look like and feel like on a day-to-day basis? If we use the example of wanting $20k, you might write down, I’m so happy and grateful now that I’m consistently making $20k per month in my business and now that I’ve earned $20k in a single month in my business, I’m filled with abundance. It feels so good to be able to pay my bills with ease. I’ve been able to leave my full-time day job and focus solely on my business. I finally feel confident with my finances and secure and stable in my life overall.
The third and final step is to give thanks. In order to manifest even more incredible things into our lives, we have to be grateful for what we currently have and there are two steps I like to incorporate into this giving thanks portion of my scripting. So first, give thanks for the things that are around you. So I’m thankful for this laptop and the internet connection that allows me to connect with you. Things that you actually have right now and can genuinely be grateful for. Then you want to give thanks for the things that you want to manifest. So if you’re trying to manifest $20k then script that I’m so grateful and thank you universe that you have sent this. Give thanks for it as if you already have it. It’s almost like telling the universe that this is a done deal and on its way to you.
The last thing that I always like to teach people about their scripting is to evoke all of their senses in their journal entries. I really encourage people to use their sight, their smell, their hearing, their taste or touch when they’re writing their journal entries to make it feel super real. If you want to manifest a new car, write about how that car smells right and how the leather seat feels against your skin, how the steering wheel feels in your hands, how the AC feels blowing on your face and how it feels to drive the car. Visualise yourself walking to the car across a parking lot or what roads you’re going to drive down. Just make it feel so real like you’re watching this movie play out in front of you.
Elley: Absolutely! It’s such an NLP thing to think about the different senses and how to almost get our subconscious mind on board.
Rachel: It’s like seeing an Instagram DM from somebody saying that they want to work with you. It’s visualising those PayPal or stripe notifications coming up on your phone that you just received a payment from a client. It’s opening your banking app and seeing that money in there. It’s opening teachable and seeing a certain number of students enrolled and a certain number of sales. Print it out and tape it on the wall somewhere where you’re going to see it so you have that reminder every single day. You also can’t just sit back. You do need to put in some sort of action. So always want to be thinking about our goals and the things that we want to manifest.
Elley: Some people think that manifesting is to just think about what you want, visualise it, feel it, smell it, taste it and then it will happen and you don’t have to do anything. No, you still have to do the work but listen to the intuitive nudges. Check-in with your goals all of the time, keep it at the forefront of your mind and then it will happen.
Let’s recap the three steps…
- The first step is the declaration. Stating that I am so happy and grateful now.
- The second step was talking about how it feels now that you have it such as what that looks like and how it smells. Involving the sensations.
- The third is giving gratitude for what you already have and then for what you’re manifesting.
Rachel: It’s so simple and it’s something that any of us can do. It might take a little practice to get the hang of it and step into embodying what you want but it works.
Elley: When you were pivoting between different careers and businesses like blogging and mindset coaching, what were the things that got you through the limiting beliefs during those stages?
Rachel: I think that anytime you’re pivoting it can really be a hard thing because you’re walking away from something that was once working for you and you essentially have to start all over. It’s kind of scary but you need to follow what feels good to you.
If your business isn’t feeling good to you anymore then you’ve got to ask yourself why. You need to figure out what’s going to make it feel better because there is no sense in sticking with the business just because it’s successful if you’re unhappy. I was always filled with so much self-doubt and limiting beliefs in making those transitions because I would question whether or not I was able to do this. When I decided last year to get certified as a life and success coach, I thought to myself who am I to do this? Like, I don’t have my life perfectly together so how am I going to be a life coach to somebody else? I had to trust that what my gut was telling me to do was the right thing and that moving in this new direction was going to bring success. In the end, I just knew that I wasn’t happy with what I was doing before and it was time to make a change.
Elley: I love that. Did you use any tools like scripting or journaling to work through those limiting beliefs when self-doubt was coming up?
Rachel: Journaling is always a big one for me even if I’m not necessarily scripting. Journaling is a good way to get all of your thoughts out and work through whatever might be coming up for you. I also turned to my tarot cards a lot. I kept pulling cards that were kind of signaling to go in that direction. It seemed like the universe was sending me all these signs. Getting guidance from my cards and journaling was really what helped me to make certain decisions in my business when it came to pivoting. I also wish that I had the NLP tools so much sooner because now I use them all of the time.
Elley: Oh my god, we’ve covered so much and now I’m so excited for the ladies listening to go and script because, honestly, I think I’m going to do that straight after this episode.
Rachel: I think I’m gonna have a good scripting section after this too!
Elley: Let’s wrap things up. This is a question that I love asking every single guest on the show. I want to know in your personal experience, what habits or personality traits do you think makes an empowered CEO?
Rachel: In my opinion, one of the personality traits is that she really believes in herself and that she knows that she has value to share with the world and she moves forward with full faith trusting that her success is inevitable because it is. As a result, I think that just makes it so much easier for her to put herself out there and showing up and knowing that the right people are going to see the value she has to add to the world.
Elley: Yes! You’ve got to have the trust that even when things are tough, even when someone reaches out and says they want to work with you and then decides that they don’t, even when something goes wrong on teachable where you host your courses – still having that trust and still having that faith of it’ll all work out. My success is inevitable.
For the ladies listening that are super excited to learn more about your courses and learn more about you. Where can they follow you?
Rachel: You can head to my website rachelmoffett.com where my blog is and links to my YouTube channel and all of my courses. One specific course that I mentioned in this episode is called Journaling in Flow which is all about scripting. It walks you through the three-step process that we cover here but so much more than that.
Elley: Amazing! Guys, I will have all of that linked in the show notes for you so you can go check it all out but thank you so much for this amazing podcast, Rachel! I’m like dying to go do some scripting. This has been honestly amazing.
